- in presence of Martin SCHULZ, EP President Background: MEPs and EP President Martin SCHULZ took part in a conference planned to send a message for reconciliation of the past with the future. The conference "Kefalonia, an Island of Peace, Solidarity and Dialogue" aimed to answer a number of stringent questions such as "Can history lead our European future? What can we learn from the historical tragic events?". During the conference, EP President Martin SCHULZ inaugurated the photo exhibition "Kefalonia, yesterday and today". The photo exhibition tells the story of Kefalonia through its history. The Greek island of Kefalonia was witnessed two disasters in its recent history: it was devastated by an earthquake 60 years ago, while 70 years ago was invaded by Italian troops which afterwards have fallen to become victims of a massacre by the German Army.

00:00:14 SOUNDBITE (English): Anni PODIMATA, (S&D, GR), Vice President of the European Parliament: "We will celebrate today the island of Kefalonia, because its people, people from Kefalonia have proven that solidarity is stronger than confrontation, solidarity is more important than division and the solidarity has the part to unite people and also because Kefalonia has assumed the role or spreading the message of peace and solidarity through the creation of the ring rise network." 00:00:31
00:00:45 SOUNDBITE (English): Rebecca HARMS, (Verts/ ALE, DE) Co-President of the Greens/EFA Group: "I think is also very good that what we have beyond the crisis discussion that we have these ideas for Greece and Europeans and what they can do together, so thank you for this initiative." 00:00:17
00:01:02 SOUNDBITE (English): Evangelos KEKATOS, Vice Mayor of the Municipality of Kefalonia (Greece): "I'm still learning and through this discussion and your agreement of creating this ring of the rise network, which is an idea of solidarity and cooperation between places that are interesting and that share feelings and not business. It is a very sensitive network, it is a unique network, because it is network that is full of feelings." 00:00:31
00:01:33 SOUNDBITE (English): Martin SCHULZ, EP President: "I think all people and the people with whom I spoke had the same feeling, the German-Greek relation are in a very specific shape for the time being and in such a moment where prejudices, tensions, we thought definitively finished and disappeared in Europe, are coming back and in such times an event to look back to commemorate, to reach atrocity, what people are able to do, such a memory is very helpful." 00:01:05
00:02:38 SOUNDBITE (English): Martin SCHULZ, EP President: "We should raise the question if the European Union as it is today is still corresponding with the idea, my feeling is that more and more people doubt that the EU and the shape it is, is answering to the challenge of the idea. Are we still as European Union an instrument, a common frame in which we are balancing the hydrogenous interest on equal footing? Or are the bigger ones giving lessons to the poor?" 00:00:37
00:03:15 SOUNDBITE (English): Martin SCHULZ, EP President: "We will do the utmost, if we agree that this is an instrument to prevent that it could be repeated, but there is never a guarantee, peace needs mutual comprehension, needs mutual respect, needs daily engagement, it is not coming from itself it must be defended every day and therefore I think this is a very precious contribution to our fight for a European Union, which is wonderful but threatened, thank you very much." 00:00:40
