00:00:18 SOUNDBITE (German) Michael THEURER (ALDE, DE) Chair of the Committee on Budgetary Control: "Only 40% of the questions that were put to the Commission and the OLAF has been answered. Maybe some of those questions were impossible to answer, but we have the impression that it is a procedural issue. We hope that today we will get additional information today to fill in the gaps" 00:00:34
00:00:52 SOUNDBITE (English) Giovanni KESSLER, Director-General of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF): "OLAF has started, as it was bound by duty, a swift investigation fully respecting the confidentiality of this matter. An investigation which has not had any kind of external influence or pressure, so a fully independent investigation, a professional investigation. I am very proud of the way my investigators dealt with it". 00:00:36
00:01:28 SOUNDBITE (English) Giovanni KESSLER, Director-General of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF): "What happened afterwards is that political decisions have been taken by other actors, judicial decision have been taken in Malta, a person has been convicted, and still the issue is ongoing in the Maltese forum; I think what has happened here is something very important: the institutions have worked in front of this external threat at their best". 00:00:34
00:02:02 SOUNDBITE (English) Theodoros SKYLAKAKIS (ALDE, GR): "The accused Commissioner did not have access to his file, so how can you go to the press without the person being able to defend himself? Did you talk about that with the Commission?" 00:00:22
00:02:24 SOUNDBITE (English) Giovanni KESSLER, Director-General of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF): "What we said in the conference was just that there was no conclusive evidence of the possible criminal responsibility of the Commissioner. We were absolutely fair. We refrained also to give the evidence to (answer) some specific questions, because this would have been unfair against him. What has happened during all these months is exactly the contrary; all the supposed, even fabricated evidence against us, has been leaked, and we did not participated in this game for the same reasons, as we did not want to make a kind of public contradictory trial". 00:00:47
00:03:11 SOUNDBITE (English) Marta ANDREASEN (ECR, UK): "I would like to know if you are aware if Dalli has put any claim or complaint that his rights have been breached at any instance by OLAF". 00:00:14
00:03:25 SOUNDBITE (English) Giovanni KESSLER, Director-General of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF): "When it comes to OLAF, he has mentioned the fact that we have by-passed the Supervisory Committee in the procedure. So this is the claim he does against OLAF that I am aware of. I am glad that he has raised this in the Court because we will be in the right position also by asking the then President of the Supervisory Committee Mr Timmermans, to be witness. We will be in the right position to clarify what has happened, that is our full legality, also to this regard". 00:00:44
00:04:09 SOUNDBITE (English) Giovanni KESSLER, Director-General of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF): "It has been repeatedly and in a slanderous way that we are financed by the tobacco company for instance... But this is totally unfounded and false". 00:00:23
00:04:32 SOUNDBITE (English) Giovanni KESSLER, Director-General of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF): "On some issues, not on the criminal responsibility, but on some other issues which has been the basis for the political conclusions drawn by the political actors, there is direct evidence which has been admitted clearly during the investigation by the Commissioner. Is not circumstantial, is evidence, strong evidence". 00:00:25
