EP President Martin SCHULZ held a meeting with Igor CORMAN, Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament. The EU is developing an increasingly close relationship with Moldova, going beyond co-operation, to gradual economic integration and a deepening of political co-operation.
Moldova is a partner country within the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP).
On 12 June, the EU and Moldova concluded their negotiations for a deep and comprehensive free trade area - negotiations that were started last year in February . The agreement will provide for significantly improved mutual access for European and Moldovan goods and services. It will also ensure an open, stable and predictable legal environment for the benefit of Moldovan businesses and consumers.

SOUNDBITE (English) Martin SCHULZ, EP President
We agree that the European perspective for Moldova is absolutely a priority for the country. For the EP, I want to underline, it is absolutely clear that we want to keep your country as much as possible near the EU. We agree that in the foreseeable time the country can not join the EU as a full member, but the agreements we just negotiating should be signed as soon as possible. We spoke about the visa regime and visa regulation. We agree that this is always a very important step to reduce obstacles for deepening especially economic cooperation. Therefore we understand the request to make the visa regime as effective as necessary.

We hope very much that it is realistic, and we will do our best. in the country, and we hope that also our European partners will support us that we sign the association agreement in the next future and that we will have the visa liberalisation for our citizens. We understand very much that we should work very hard home, and I have the feeling that our European partners are also able to support us.

About Transnistria. The EP is only one participant. There are other participants. Every participants: the Parliament in Moldova, the government, people in Ukraine, we here, also people in the Russian federation, people in Transnistria, who ever, we must check who has a chance to speak to whom to create a network of dialogue which could contribute to reduce the tensions. This is already a lot and more I can say, I'm not prepared to say more.
