MEPs voted on the plans to appoint a European public prosecutor to protect the EU's financial interests and introduce an EU-wide definition of mafia-style crime. These plans are part of a package of proposed laws and measures to equip EU law enforcement bodies to combat crime better at national, EU and international levels. Other proposed measures include introducing new laws to protect witnesses and informers, new rules making it easier to use criminals' confiscated assets for social purposes and barring anyone convicted for corruption from bidding for public contracts in the EU. These plans were drawn up by Parliament's Special Committee on Organised Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering.
