SOS migrants on boat: Amnesty International action
Première transmission: 24/04/2013
European Parliament, Brussels
Fin de production: 24/04/2013
A demonstration organised by Amnesty International took place today in front the European Parliament. Director of Amnesty International European Institutions Office, Nicolas Berger, delivered a bottle to MEP Juan Fernando López Aguilar, Chair of the LIBE Committee, which contained over 70.000 signatures. Amnesty International is urging Member States to watchdog and hold governments and institutions to account for how they treat the migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers, who arrive at EU frontiers. Protestors, together with a symbolical boat, have gone through the streets of Brussels surrounding the European Parliament. The boat aimed to represent all the migrants, refugees and activists from across Europe, that demand for greater transparency and accountability at Europe’s borders.

||SOUNDBITE (English) Juan Fernando López Aguilar MEP, Chair of the LIBE Committee: "We do not accept the very concept of 'illegal migrants'. We care about migrants, we care about their rights. We had the chance to say it so when reviewing the mandate of the Frontex Agency in 2011. We care about making sure some fundamental rights classes were introduced in this renewal of the mandate in the Frontex Agency, regarding the fundamental rights officer within the agency and a consultative forum on fundamental rights, including the contribution of the NGOs, which are committed to fundamental rights issues, as it is the case of organisations represented here".
