On 14 March, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, held a press conference folowing the European Council. The Presidents reaffirmed that EU will continue its economic strategy which includes restoring financial stability, ensuring structurally sound public finances, fighting young employment and the reform of long term growth and competitiveness. They underlined that the strategy of fiscal consolidation pays off with already some results in some Member States. 'The Euro is more stable, confidence is starting to return, macroeconomic imbalances are being reduced and competitiveness is improving', added José Manuel Barroso. He also emphasised the importance of fairly sharing the burden of the efforts made by the citizens. On Hungary, the EC President said that the Commission will look at the amendments made by the national parliament assessing the compatibility of this legislation with the EU values.

Compared to years ago, the Euro is more stable confidence is starting to return with interest rates decreasing.
