Following his visit to Thailand in November 2012, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, met with Yingluck Shinawatra, Thai Prime Minister, on 6 March 2013 in Brussels.
Talks focused on trade and investment relations, as well as on the upcoming free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations between the European Union and Thailand. The Thai Parliament gave the go-ahead to a framework for the expected FTA negotiations, which are expected to take around two years to conclude. Total bilateral trade would be expected to increase, with the FTA reducing import tariffs by more than the current General System of Preferences for Thai goods exported into Europe.
