EP President Martin SCHULZ met this morning with Thierry REPENTIN, French Minister for European Affairs since March 20th. He, a former socialist senator from the French Alps, and after minister delegate for vocational training, has already started to deal with negotiations with the EP and the Commission. Among other things, Mr REPENTIN calls for lenience on France's failure to meet the EU's 3% limit on budget deficits justifying it by their expenditure on Mali's situation. REPENTIN has some experience in European Affairs, as he began his political career as an aide to MEP Jean-Pierre Cot (S&D) and worked briefly at the EC during the 1980s. During Hollande's presidential campaign in 2012, REPENTIN was responsible for issues related to habitat and urban policy, and with this current charge, he is replacing Bernard Cazeneuve, who has been named budget minister to succeed Jérôme Cahuzac, implicated in a tax fraud case
