Background: (press release)
More focussed support for societies and parliaments in Arab Spring countries embracing democracy and ways of enhancing the role of women will top the agenda of Mediterranean parliamentarians meeting in Brussels on 11 and 12 April. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM) will also discuss renewable energy and water management projects.
European Parliament President Martin Schulz and MEPs will welcome members of national parliaments from Mediterranean countries to the ninth plenary meeting of the PA-UfM, which will follow the first summit of speakers of the UfM parliaments, held in Marseille on 6 and 7 April.
Speakers' summit in Marseille
The Marseille summit, convened by President Schulz, was the first high-level UfM regional meeting since UfM heads of state and government met in Paris in 2008.
The Marseille speakers summit called for a new impetus in implementing UfM projects, including renewed funding, at a time of major political and economic changes in the region. More than 40 speakers stressed the need to boost the parliamentary dimension of the UfM and strengthen national parliaments in Mediterranean countries making the transition to democracy.
