00:00:33 SOUNDBITE (French) Martin SCHULZ, EP President: "The Union for the Mediterranean’s political legitimacy needs to be secured by means of greater public involvement and broader representation. The UfM’s governing bodies have much to gain by drawing on the energy of civil society, business people and local authorities. Although it will not be easy, our parliamentary assembly needs to establish itself as a driving force, a forum for consultation and a body which can exercise real democratic scrutiny." 00:00:38
00:01:11 SOUNDBITE (French) Martin SCHULZ, EP President: "Over the past 20 years, more than 8000 would-be migrants have perished in the Mediterranean. We cannot allow this tragic loss of human life to continue." 00:00:17
00:01:28 SOUNDBITE (French) Martin SCHULZ, EP President: "I am very thankful to all of you to be here. We have 42 Parliaments represented here, it is a very strong signal to show that Parliaments take very seriously the Mediterranean challenge. Today we have an historic chance to re-launch the political dimension of the UfM through our declaration and through parliamentarism". 00:00:40

00:02:37 Press Conference - SOUNDBITE (French) Martin SCHULZ, EP President: "For the first time since 2008, the UfM brings together the highest parliamentary level. By adopting this common declaration we are making an appeal for more action, more investments, for new creations, for a re-launch of activities in this framework for the relations between the EU member states and the countries of the other side of Mediterranean Sea, countries of Maghreb, and the Arab world". 00:00:35
00:03:12 Press Conference - SOUNDBITE (French) Martin SCHULZ, EP President: "Before there were times when the dictators were speaking at this kind of high level conferences. Today, here we are the presidents of free elected Parliaments and it is a concrete expression of the fact that the democracy is the base of our cooperation. Beyond all our specificity and agreements or disagreements on whether this or that element is too strong or too weak, beyond all these specificity, the message is that the parliamentarian democracy is the base of the cooperation between the two sides of the Mediterranean Sea. This is the message of the Marseille conference today, and I find that it is an enormous progress of which we have to proud about". 00:00:48
00:04:00 Press Conference - SOUNDBITE (French) Martin SCHULZ, EP President: "This conference Ladies and Gentlemen is a chance, a change for a re-launch of a project which has been completely underestimated. The economic, ecologic and educational dimensions, as well as the political cooperation between the EU and the countries in transition in the North Africa is a historic chance to create in the Mediterranean area a political and economical cooperation zone. This will be unique and can be a model of inter-regional cooperation for the rest of the world." 00:00:40
