- extracts from the exchange of views with Antonio TAJANI, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship EP Committee on Transport and Tourism Background: MEPs of the Transport and Tourism Committee held an exchange of views with Antonio TAJANI, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship, to explore possible proposals at EU level in the contest of the "Tourism Task Force". They discussed issues such as quality labels and a harmonised star rating system for hotels. The EP Tourism Task Force is a work programme designed on October 2011 as a strategy to encourage tourism that raises awareness of culture, history, religion and nature whilst offering new services in the fields of sport, promoting industrial heritage and farm tourism. This initiative was proposed to allow, during the period of 2012/2013, the creation of sustainable jobs in the regions and counter the rural exodus. Another challenge was to improve the mutual recognition by MS of tourist industry qualifications in order to facilitate the mobility of workers and help tackle problems stemming from seasonal nature of work in this sector, fact that affects more than 96% of the destinations in the EU. The tourism sector accounted, in 2011, for 10% of the GDP and 12% of total employment in the EU. The work programme presented by Carlo FIDANZA (EPP, IT) proposed also the facilitation on the Visa bureaucratic system to attract tourism from countries non belonging to the EU like, for example, the BRIC Countries.

00:00:25 SOUNDBITE (Italian): Antonio TAJANI, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship: "We are realising now that tourism is actually a sector of the economy that really can help to fight the crisis. It has a leading role in creating jobs for young people." 00:00:14
00:00:39 SOUNDBITE (Italian): Antonio TAJANI, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship: "The key issue as far as I'm concerned is visas, in my view our visa rules are too old fashioned, we need to take count of the fact that the U.S. which has made its domestic security a real bulwark, none of the less makes it makes it easy for people from Brazil or China to enter the country." 00:00:33
00:01:12 SOUNDBITE (Italian): Antonio TAJANI, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship: "Although I realise that we can change existing rules over night, but we do need to be more flexible. We have to have leading edge technologies for issuing our visas and that would be for the benefit of our economy. A quarter of potential visitors to Europe give up visiting Europe, precisely out of the problem in getting a visa. So you can see if you go outside of Europe, look at the queues outside the European Embassies just before the summer holidays. So we need to make it easier for people to get visas." 00:00:39
00:01:51 SOUNDBITE (Italian): Carlo FIDANZA, rapporteur: "I can only note very positively the repeated suggestion on the importance of visa policy is now being reflected in an official text which can be a mile stone in that cause of action as a result of the cooperation between the Vice President Tajani and Commissioner Malmström." 00:00:20
00:02:11 SOUNDBITE (Greek):Spyros DANELLIS, (S&D, GR): "You mentioned something that we have seen in the Fidanza report, in order to be efficient we need financing, we need money to support actions. And here we have a very big problem and it is a big question that needs an answer. The point you raised and you gave us some hope, that there is a will to do something, to face the problem that is visas." 00:00:30
