Four legislative proposals adopted and over 1,000 amendments examined : MEPs voted this midday on EP's position on the reform of the EU's agricultural policy. These reforms aim to secure a stable supply of high quality food for EU consumers and insist, at the same time, on a better protection of the environment. Some of the reforms, that will have to be finally agreed by Member States, will ensure that direct payments are sent only to active farmers and not to land owners such as airports or sport clubs, if they do not farm. Objective is also to introduce some transparency measures to show who exactly benefits from EU agricultural funding; to rejuvenate the sector giving higher subsidies to young farmers; and to make farm greener introducing more flexible measures which would reflect the size of the farm and their impact on the environment. Global goal being to make farming greener, less bureaucratic and more competitive without threatening Europe's food supply. The position adopted this week will determine how Parliament negotiates with member states later this month. The agricultural policy can only be reformed if both Parliament and the member states agree on it. Once agreed, the new polilcy should be in place from the beginning of 2014.
