MEPs have debated today four legislative proposals and 8,000 amendments to reform the Common Agricultural Policy. This reforms aim to secure a stable supply of high quality food for EU consumers insisting, at the same time, on a better protection of the environment. Some of the reforms, that will have to be finally agreed by Member States, are to ensure that direct payments are sent only to active farmers and not to land owners such as airports or sport clubs, if they not farm; to introduce some transparency measures to show who exactly benefits from EU agricultural funding; to rejuvenate the sector giving higher subsidies to young farmers; and to make farm greener introducing more flexible measures which would reflect the size of the farm and their impact on the environment. .
