Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, was in Mali on 22 January 2013, returning after her last visit in December 2012, to assess the situation to determine how the aid can be spent to reach maximum impact. She met with Richard Zink, Head of the EU Delegation in Mali, and French Brigadier General François Lecointre, Commander of the EU Training Mission in Mali (EUTM Mali), as well as with Django Sissoko, acting Malian Prime Minister, and Mamadou Sidibé, Malian Minister for Humanitarian Action, Solidarity and the Elderly People. The European Commission is boosting again its humanitarian aid for the Mali crisis with 20 million euro – a needed increase that will help respond to the escalating crisis in the country where large numbers of people are fleeing from the conflict and thousands of children are severely malnourished.
