On 18 January, Štefan Füle, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, and Habib Ben Yahia, Secretary General of the Arab Maghreb Union, held a press point after their meeting in the European Commission. They underlined that cooperation between Maghreb and EU is more important than ever in the light of recent events in Mali. They spoke about the launch initiatives in the areas of energy, transport, private sector and rural development. Habib Ben Yahia underlined that security is a priority for the Maghreb region adding that Ministers of Interior will work on the issue together in the coming weeks. 'The aim is that our region won't become the 'new Afghanistan', he said.
