EP President Martin SCHULZ met today with U Thein Sein, President of Myanmar; the country in Southeast Asia formerly known as Burma. U Thein Sein was a former general of the Communist military dictatorship and is being President of Burma since March 2011. He was also Prime Minister of the country from 2007 to 2011. This once-loyal apparatchik is now considered as a moderate and reformist politician in the post-junta government. Under his direction, the country has seen a series of political reforms including some deregulation of the censored media or the releasing of many political prisoners. However, he was called by the EP on September 2012 to stop the continuing ethnic violence suffered by the Muslim Rohingya minority in the west of the country.
