MEPs debated on online gambling in the internal market . The event was organised by EP Committee of Internal Market and Consumer Protection. On the topic, Ashley R FOX (ECR, UK) made a statement.
On 23 October 2012, the European Commission adopted the Communication “Towards a comprehensive European framework on online gambling”. Based on an in-depth public consultation, this Communication sets out an action plan which is seeking to enhance clarity throughout the EU for the benefit of national authorities, operators, consumers and related industry such as payment service or media service providers". Five action areas are prioritised to address the challenges faced at EU and national level: compliance of national regulatory frameworks with EU law, enhancing administrative cooperation and efficient enforcement, protecting consumers and citizens, minors and vulnerable groups, preventing fraud and money laundering and safeguarding the integrity of sports and preventing match-fixing.

||SOUNDBITE (English) by Ashley FOX, (ECR, UK) rapporteur, "The first area where we need to take action is compliance with EU law. most Members here appreciate that we went through a period of time when the Commission did little or nothing to enforce the law and I regard that as deeply regrettable."
||SOUNDBITE (English) by Ashley FOX, (ECR, UK) rapporteur," I will bee urging the Commission to enforce the rules of the Single Market. I think the Single Market will benefit from administrative cooperation between national regulators and enforcement issues. We can have for example common technical standards which will bring greater efficiency and I give an example, the common identification of players is a practical area where the EU can bring value."
||SOUNDBITE (English) by Ashley FOX, (ECR, UK) rapporteur, "We need to take action on consumer protection and advertising , an example of this would be the ability of consumers to set gambling limits or to self exclude themselves from online sites and for that to be applicable to the whole of the Single Market. We could start with a code of conduct we could for example have a kite mark which certain operators would be entitled to display if they are abided by a code of conduct and then that could move in time to harder law. We also need to take action on money laundering to ensure that does occur as part of the online gambling market and we also need to ensure the integrity of sport. We need to ensure that online gambling does not play a part in match fixing and other criminality"
