||SOUNDBITE (in English) by Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council: This morning, we had a good discussion on our Common Security and Defence Policy. It's been a while – in fact since 2008 – that this issue has been discussed at our level. There are several reasons why I wanted to bring it back on our agenda. For one thing, the security challenges that Europe faces have, if anything, increased over the last few years; and our countries are being called upon to assume more responsibility in the maintenance of peace in our neighbourhood and beyond

||SOUNDBITE (in English) by Herman Van Rompuy: We also had a substantial discussion on the increasingly deteriorating situation in Syria, a situation by which we are appalled. We have a moral duty on this issue, where so many
innocent lives are being lost. We underlined the gravity of the situation, and the need to support the coalition of Syrian opposition forces in the most effective way. We stressed the need for Assad to leave office, and for a real political process to take place.
||SOUNDBITE (in English) by José Manuel Barroso: We need to get young people into the market to deliver job rich recovery. Last week the Commission presented the Youth employment package, I hope it will help Member States in tackling youth unemployment by establishing youth guarantees and a quality framework for traineeships, Within four month after leaving school we would like to have all young people to get back either into education, traineeship or of course a job.

||SOUNDBITE (in English) by José Manuel Barroso: We had last night also a good discussion on future of the EMU. I believe national ownership and deep discussion is vital on these sensitive issues. No door was closed on steps towards deeper EMU and we will keep moving forward. The Commission will keep driving the ambition
||SOUNDBITE (in English) by Demetris Christofias: The meeting of the European Council that just took place is unquestionably yet another step in our course in completing an integrating economic monetary union. The way to construct a substantive economic and monetary union is a long one and we definitely need to maintain the momentum. The decisions that have been taken and the orientations that have been decided, will determine to a significant degree the course of the European Union in next years. The reform that is taking place aiming at the more effective economic and financial governance will also help us to face up quicker to the economic crisis that is hurting the Union.
