On 16 November 2012, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, paid a visit to Mariano Rajoy, Spanish Prime Minister, in Cadix, Spain. The leaders stressed the importance of the EU budget for creating conditions for investment to growth and jobs in Europe. On Spain, they both welcomed that Spain has taken effective measures correcting its excessive deficit. President Barroso expressed his appreciation for significant efforts that the government and the Spanish people are making to ensure the sustainability of public finances - efforts that are assuming major sacrifices for a large part of the population - and to boost competitiveness of the Spanish economy.
