This afternoon the Flame of Peace was handed over to the European Parliament. Surrounded by music and light, EP Vice-President Anni PODIMATA (S&D, EL) and MEP Paul RÜBIG (EPP, AT) welcomed the Flame of Peace from Bethlehem before it was transferred by boat to the Sharing Village in Strasbourg, at the heart of the Christmas capital. For the last 16 years, the European Parliament , the Council of Europe and the City of Strasbourg have welcomed the Flame of Peace from Bethlehem. The Flame of Peace recalls the Nativity as a symbol of Peace and understanding between people all over the world. The tradition began in 1986, when an Austrian radio took the initiative of collecting a flame lit in the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem and bringing it back to Vienna. The Flame was then distributed throughout the country by Scouts.
