00:00:20 SOUNDBITE (French) Martin SCHULZ, President of the European Parliament (English translation) "Next to me, you can see a young man, Larkin Zahra. This is the youngster that won our competition organised before the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony. (In English) : For the Nobel Peace Prize we thought to invite young people all over Europe to send us their proposals, the question being : what are your thoughts, spontaneous feeling for this honour and decoration for the European Union ? And Larkin was the winner and we became friends during the last 3 days. Isn't it so ?" 00:00:56
00:01:16 SOUNDBITE (English) Larkin ZAHRA, winner of the Contest " Peace, Europe, Future" : "My quote was that my grand-parents would have said peace in Europe would be a dream. My parents would have said it is a process, and I can say that, thanks also to the EU, it is my every day reality." (applause) 00:00:21
00:01:37 SOUNDBITE (English) Larkin ZAHRA, winner of the Contest " Peace, Europe, Future" : "Younger generations are the future of Europe, and I do believe that it will be a bright one indeed. Thank you very much." (applause) 00:00:10
00:01:47 SOUNDBITE (French) Martin SCHULZ, President of the European Parliament (English translation) "We are happy today, we congratulate ourselves every day on this historical progress, but one thing goes often forgotten : that wasn't that easy, just after World War II, to ask French people : forgive the Germans. To tell the Belgians, the Dutch, the Italian people : the Germans receive more from the Marshall Plan than you do. Think about the place where I was born, on the border between Germany, Belgium and Nederland, the so called Maastricht-Liège-Aachen triangle. People by that time asked : why should we forgive the Germans, when they invaded our countries twice ? When they destroyed every single house, every single school, every single bridge ? When they burnt the kindergartens, chase patients from hospitals, and exterminated our Jewish neighbours ? That wasn't that obvious. People who were asking for that forgiveness were wildly attacked, they had to fight against the majority of the public opinion. But finally they won, and the result is the European Union we are living in today. And it's thanks to this courage of being able to argue against the public opinion. I wish there was more of this spirit today to defend the success of Europe against the majority of the sceptic and hostile public opinion." (applause) 00:02:01
