José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Andris Berzins, President of Latvia, tonight in Brussels. Topics for discussion included Latvia's economic recovery and the upcoming European Council of 22 & 23 November on the European budget.
Last week, the European Commission forecasted Latvia's economic growth to reach 4.3% in 2012.
Latvia's economy expanded at the quickest pace in the European Union in the third quarter, fuelled by trade, manufacturing and construction. If it stays on track, the country could join the euro in 2014, according to the European Commission.
The meeting took place in the margins of the "Friends of Cohesion" summit (Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Croatia) which is meeting tomorrow at the European Parliament in Brussels to defend a strong cohesion policy and try to strike a deal on the EU's next MFF (Multiannual Financial Framework) for 2014-2020.
