European Commissioner Maire Geoghegan-Quinn, responsible for research, innovation and science, is in Cape Town to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the SA-EU agreement on cooperation in science and technology. Today the EU delegation visited the Belville campus of the University of the Western Cape. It was an opportunity to talk about future perspectives of this EU-SA agreement in fields like biotechnology and marine biodiversity. The Commissioner also walked around the campus. Then the Commissioner took a drive in a local taxi-minibus that has advanced traffic technology to improve traffic management. Technology funded by the EU. She had followed a presentation in the morning about this project to book, track and manage urban mobility, and thus wanted to see it in action herself too. The presentation in the morning was indeed to see how this EU-SA cooperation could progress in the field of innovative and green transport policies.

00:02:20 Soundbite Commissioner Maire Geoghegan-Quinn (in English): “I am certainly taking away from this that there are enormous opportunities in public transport, in health, in agriculture, in marine, in all of the areas we have an interest in in Europe we can learn an awful lot. And over this period here I’ve learned an enormous amount from researchers and professors involved in this area. So I see opportunities coming up in Horizon 2020 where we can widen and deepen the collaborations we have with South Africa. 00:00:31
