The UN climate summit in Doha (COP 18) should spur the EU and other countries around the world to step up their action to limit global warming, say Environment Committee MEPs in a resolution adopted today. A majority called for the EU to aim for a 30% reduction in emissions by 2020.

00:02:55 SOUNDBITE (English) Elisabetta GARDINI (EPP, IT); “The main issue is actually called the ‘make or break’ issue is finance financing funds and what everybody ask is to have not just political statement but everybody wants to see real pledges with figures and I think this is crucial issue because of the crises and at the moment just few countries pledges with figures”. 00:00:35
00:03:30 SOUNDBITE (English) Elisabetta GARDINI (EPP, IT); “Europe is asked to do more, yes it s true. But the strange thing, and this make bigger concern, is that we are the most ambitious group and at the same time we are the most blamed group, and this is not an easy position for European Union. But we still bring the leadership on this”. 00:00:30

They want absolutely to keep their ‘warm air’, that means their capacity to have their emission quota which doesn’t correspond to anything. So all this create a very heavy atmosphere". 00:00:00

00:04:26 SOUNDBITE (French) Corinne LEPAGE (ALDE, FR) “The situation is to worrying to keep doing like that, organising big conferences wish will ping-pong to the next one the important decisions to be taken. This situation is going on since 10 years. We can not allow this anymore”. 00:00:12
00:04:38 SOUNDBITE (French) Corinne LEPAGE (ALDE, FR) We, Europeans are in a paradox situation : we are those during the most of the efforts, either on the Kyoto 2, or on the financing envelope; and we are the most blamed, both by NGO’s or by the South countries. So I find this is not just and very irritating”. 00:00:17
00:04:55 SOUNDBITE (French) Corinne LEPAGE (ALDE, FR) “It is a bit easy for the US, of course, they do almost nothing, and also for the Chinese and for those whom are extremely rich today. We are in a very rich country, but they do almost no effort while they are the country in the region polluting the most per habitant. They do not yet propose any financing of the issue, as they should do, at least to compensate the CO2 they are rejecting in to the atmosphere”. 00:00:30
