Ahead of the Irish Presidency which begins in January 2013, EP President Martin Schulz and leaders of the political groups in the European Parliament will be in Dublin on Thursday and Friday to meet the Taoiseach and the Irish government. On the occasion of the visit President Schulz said: "The Irish Presidency comes at a crucial time for the European Union, and I have full confidence in the Presidency as it is well-prepared. The European Parliament will work closely with the Irish Presidency to get Europe back on track, be it through banking supervision legislation, adopting an ambitious budget for the Union, or through the implementation of the European Semester. This will be Ireland's seventh Presidency of the European Union and 2013 will also mark Ireland's 40th anniversary in the Union - I have full confidence that Ireland and rest of the EU will return to the path of sustainable growth."
On Friday, the Conference of Presidents met the Speakers of the two Houses of the Irish Parliament, the chairs of political groups and Ireland's Minister for Europe. Later, President Schulz will held a meeting with the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins

||SOUNDBITE (English) Uachtarain na hEireann , President of Ireland: "The European Parliament, now being co-legislator with the Council. It is appropriate that each incoming Presidency listen to and take careful account of the European Parliament's concerns and priorities. If its to effectively progress the Union's legislative agenda during this 6 months period."
||SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Schulz, EP President: "We have some fundamental decisions ahead, about the Multianual Financial framework, we must find an agreement. Because at the last Summit didn't, is now up to the Irish presidency to find an agreement. During the Irish Presidency we must achieve some of the major problems for the financial regulations; we must find some solutions for the problems on the future structure of the EU. The debate is going on".
||SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Schulz, EP President: "You saved the banking system here , and because you saved the Banking system here - an European banking system - you saved us, all Europeans, from a banking crash in Europe. Therefore Ireland deserved the solidarity of European Union as a whole. I found it a shame the fact that the Heads of States and Governments adopted a signal of solidarity with concrete decisions in the June Council and some of the finance ministers of the strongest member states put it in doubt some days later. This is not the European Union we want to see, to act, as European parliamentarians and therefore Ireland can count on the European parliament on the next six months".
