OPEN DAYS 2012 - 10th European Week of Regions and Cities: highlights of the day
Première transmission: 11/10/2012
Brussels, Belgium - Committee of the Regions of the EU
Fin de production: 11/10/2012
Regional development and its compatibility with EU competition and state aid policies was the theme on the final day of the Committee of the Regions (CoR) Open Days 2012. In a high-level seminar that effectively closed the four-day event, European Commission Vice-President Joaquin Almunia and EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn argued that the use of state aid must be limited to those who need it most. They said that regional policy and competition policy must work in harmony, rather than at odds, if they are to be effective. As they met, European and regional officials met with counterparts from Latin America to exchange ideas and best practice.

||Soundbite (in English) Joaquin Almunia, European Commission Vice-President: "We need to better use public money. We need to be more strict when analysing the way public is being used, because public money is urgently needed by those who are suffering more because of the lack of growth, because of the lack of capacity to attract investment, because of the lack of growth opportunities. And at the same time, public money is scarce."

||Soundbite (in English) Johannes Hahn, EU Commissioner for Regional Policy: "Together, let's make sure we reform in a coherent manner, at all levels, European, national and regional. We must grasp the nettle. Only by working together in reaching the EU 2020 objectives shall Europe continue to be a prosperous and fair place to live."
||Soundbite (in GERMAN) Ursula Männle, Rapporteur and Member of the Bavarian State Assembly saying that: on the police directive, what's striking is that it is not just limited to cross-border prosecution of crime, etc. There are more far reaching provisions which would encroach on national legislation.

||Soundbite (in English) Ronald Hall, Director DG Regio: "The topic today was a crucial one for Europe with our 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, which is that of promoting innovation and innovation strategies in the region, and therefore there is a lot to be discussed between the European Union and its regions and Latin American countries and regions precisely on this theme."
