On 18 September, John Dalli, Member of the EC in charge Health and Consumer Policy, Sandro Rosell, FC Barcelona President, and Dr Jordi Monés, FC Barcelona Medical Director, presented the official partnership between the football club and the Commission's " Ex-smokers are Unstoppable " campaign. The partnership, christened " Quit Smoking with Barça ", brings together two major campaigns - the pan-EU "Ex-smokers are Unstoppable" and Barça's "Sense Fum" movement. With tobacco accounting for nearly 700 000 premature deaths per year in the EU, both parties have declared their commitment to reduce the burden of smoking and tobacco-related disease and death. Today also sees the launch of the "Ex-smokers" iCoach tool as a mobile app. Available both for iOS and Android systems, the app will offer iCoach users ease of access to this valuable digital/mobile health coach while they are on the move. The App is available via www.exsmokers.eu/mobile , and in the Apple Store under "Ex-smokers iCoach".

00:00:49 SOUNDBITE (in English) John Dalli: The treat of smoking to EU citizens can not be overstated. Tobacco is the single biggest cost of avoidable death in the EU. 30 million people suffer from diseases caused by smoking such as cardiovascular diseases and chronic abstractive pulmonary diseases. Despite this figures almost a third of 28 % of EU citizens currently smoke. 00:00:32
00:01:21 SOUNDBITE (in Catalan). Sandro Rosell, President of FC Barcelona saying that: For all these reasons, for the health values that govern our club and because we wanted to protect everyone but especially children and we want this to be an example in the future to all communities of followers of football across Europe we want to thank to the European Commission and Commissioner Dalli for choosing the Barcelona FC for this campaign. 00:00:42
00:02:03 SOUNDBITE (in English) Jordi Mones i Carilla, Medical Director of FC Barcelona: Thanks to the initiatives and persistence of the EU Commission, we could say that at some point in, the future, the people will hardly believe that in the past people could have been smoking. These days are closed and the most preventable risk factors nowadays for the health is close to be eradicated. 00:00:20

00:02:32 SOUNDBITE (in English) John Dalli: Barcelona was a very natural choice. We noticed that Barcelona has the vision and the power to send this message that we are sending though our campaign 'no smokers are unstoppable'. They had already taken the decision to have their clubs and their stadiums smoke free. And we though it could be a good combination to have. We will have a public of over 40 millions people that follow Barca in Facebook, twitter and social media. 00:00:43
00:03:15 SOUNDBITE (in English) John Dalli: So I think this should be an example to other football teams and people in sport that it is a healthy exercise, a healthy environment and stopping smoking is a healthy initiative for all the supporters and all the people practising sport. 00:00:22
