A delegation of 15 Members of European Parliament (MEPs) was in Kyiv to take part in an observation mission, together with more than 700 international observers from different international organisations which monitored the 28 October parliamentary elections in Ukraine.
The aim of MEPs' mission was to assess whether the 2012 parliamentary elections in Ukraine were conducted according to country's international commitments and national laws.

||OUNDBITE: Robert KOWAL, ECR, Poland, chair of the mission ( in Polish): “I think that the first conclusions are that, unfortunately, there is some regression. Of course compared to other countries of the region, I mean countries which were part of the Soviet Union, Ukraine maintains some democratic standards, voters can indeed choose and want to do so but on the other hand there is some regression compared to the 2010 or 2007 elections, when these possibilities, particularly in the period preceding the elections, of presenting political programmes, showing how the country could be changed if a different party was elected, were much broader. So, compared to other countries of the former Soviet Union, the situation with elections in Ukraine is still not bad but, compared to previous elections in Ukraine, there is some regression.”
