10:00:53 Soundbite by Androulla Vassiliou (in ENGLISH): I believe that there is a very close connectivity between education and culture. And that is why for example we have among our 8 key competences that we expect our young people to obtain from their school. One of them is culture awareness and cultural expression. Because then only, if they have these, they can really become useful and active citizens in their societies. 00:00:34

10:01:36 Soundbite by Androulla Vassiliou (in ENGLISH): We have two objectives. The first one is to make culture more accessible to people, to break down the barriers and give the opportunity to all the people inspite of age, inspite of race, inspite of economical social standings to be able to enjoy art and culture. The second is to expand our audience and the only reason we can expand our audience is to try to make culture understood and enjoyed by young people from very young age to the older people as well. 00:00:40

10:02:24 Soundbite by Androulla Vassiliou (in ENGLISH): Culture and education are central to the European project. They are what define us as individuals, as members of a community and citizens. Education gives us the tools that allow us to shovel future and as I said, to play an active role in our respective societies. Culture is also what binds us together in this very rich mosaic that is the European Union. Economic integration in the single market is enormous achievement but it is our shared culture, artistic and historical heritage that make us truly European. 00:00:49

10:03:18 Soundbite by Androulla Vassiliou (in ENGLISH): Culture and the arts are essential for the long term well-being of our societies. There is ample evidence that cultural participation strongly support social cohesion. Culture, it is said, is the life of the mind. Exclusion from culture is a cruel exclusion indeed. 00:00:27

10:04:12 Soundbite by Androulla Vassiliou (in ENGLISH): Dear friends, someone once said "Politicians do not bring people together, artists do". Should someone want proof of this, they have to look no further than Aix en Provence. Thank you for your attention. 00:00:22
