MEPs adopted on Thursday a resolution warning member states that the proposed banking union must be ambitious but that current plans will lead to a system that is neither transparent nor democratically accountable. On Wednesday the issue has been debated with Michel Barnier, the Commissioner responsible for the internal market. He said that that the draft legislation unveiled by the European Commission the same day to give the European Central Bank over-riding powers over bank supervision in the eurozone was unprecedented in terms of polling economic and financial sovereignty.
