On 2 July 2012, Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen, Danish Permanent Representative to the EU, gave a press conference on the achievements of the Danish Presidency. On 1 July 2012, Denmark passed the torch to the Republic of Cyprus which assumed its first Presidency of the Council of the EU, in an undeniably difficult time for Europe.
