On 31 May 2012, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, participated at the invitation of Angela Merkel, German Federal Chancellor, in the 9th Baltic Sea State Summit held in Stralsund, Germany. The main discussion points on the agenda focused on energy security and demographic changes in the Baltic Sea region. Competitiveness and sustainable growth, both in the region and in Europe as a whole, were of course also part of the discussions of the leaders. Baltic Sea State Summits take place every other year in the framework of the Council of the Baltic Sea States, established in 1992 to support the development and cooperation in the region. Eight EU countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden) and three non-EU countries (Island, Norway and Russia) are members.
