On 7 May 2012, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Kuupik Kleist, Greenlandic Prime Minister, in Brussels. The discussions focused on the strategic potential of the EU/Greenland relation. Kuupik Kleist and the President exchanged views on how to further enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest, namely Arctic issues, natural resources and environment, in addition to EU/Greenland longstanding cooperation on fisheries. This meeting came at a time when the EC was working on an Arctic Policy Communication to be adopted in the weeks after. This would set out measures to protect the Arctic environment and support sustainable development in the region.
