On 24 April 2012, Cecilia Malmström, Member of the EC in charge of Home Affairs, visited the Apulia Region in Southern Italy where confiscated farmland is used for agriculture and social projects, creating jobs and opportunities in the local community. She was welcomed by Nichi Vendola, President of the Apulia Region, and had the opportunity to meet the Libera Terra Puglia Cooperative. Luxury villas, farmlands and nightclubs are among the assets that the Italian police has confiscated from the mafia last years. In response, the European Commission recently proposed new EU rules for more effective confiscation of criminal assets in Europe.
