President SCHULZ met today with the new Romanian Prime Minister, Victor Ponta. The leader of the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD) has taken over the power from Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu of the centre-right National Liberal Party, who was forced to step down, after only three months in power, by a vote of no confidence on 27 April. The mandate granted to Ponta, a 39 year-old lawyer, is only set to last for six months until general elections are held in November.
The tasks of the Ponta government are the follows: management of day-to-day problems, the organisation of elections, and of course, boosting the electoral appeal of the parties that put him in power. In addition, slightly more than one day after his designation, Ponta met with the IMF, EC and WB delegation to finalize the IMF agreement to Romania. In exchange for support of the international financial organisms, Ponta has to have a commitment on the part of his government for the continuation of the reforms and macro-economic policies regarding the economic and financial stability of the country.
