On 12 February 2012, Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, went to Burma/Myanmar. In response to the impressive reform agenda which began to take shape there after the new civilian Government took office, he announced a new €150 million assistance package for 2012/2013 to support democratic reforms and inclusive development in the country. He met with the Representatives of the UN agencies and the international NGOs, in the presence of David Lipman, Head of Delegation of the EU to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Burma/Myanmar. Since 1996, EU had allocated €174 million in support of the people of Burma/Myanmar. However, EU had launched a review of this policy. The assistance would initially be devoted to health, education, and agriculture, and to help displaced people in ethnic areas, with further areas to be explored in line with developments.

10:02:07 SOUNDBITE (in English) by Andris Piebalgs: until now we have addressed three sectors : one is the agriculture in particularly in the very poor areas; another part is the access to the education; and the last one is the access to the health, in particular fighting malaria, tuberculosis, HIV. I believe that it would be right to continue this programme just to expand them, because we have now programmes running for hundred million (euros), and if we have another one hundred million (euros), it would be quite more impressive what we could do on the ground. That are million of people that we can help. 00:00:33
