On 24 January 2012, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Viktor Orbán, Hungarian Prime Minister, in Brussels. The leaders discussed bailout talks that broke down on December 2011 over a central bank law that the International Monetary Fund and the EU said threatens monetary-policy independence. On 17th January, the European Commission launched infringement proceedings against Hungary over the central bank, the judiciary and the data protection agency.
