On 14 January 2012, Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, went to Maribor, European Capital of Culture 2012. She notably met Danilo Türk, President of Slovenia, and Suzana Žilič Fišer, Director General of the Institute "Maribor 2012 – European Capital of Culture". Guimarães (Portugal) and Maribor (Slovenia) took over the title of European Capitals of Culture 2012 on 1 January. Both cities had a busy calendar of events planned for the year, with the aim of showcasing themselves to the world and building a lasting legacy for their citizens. The official programme of events began on 13 January in Maribor with music, theatre and dance performances. Numerous and varied cultural events, combining traditional and innovative approaches, from carnival to contemporary dance, were planned throughout the year. Young audiences were a particular focus of the events. This EU initiative had been a great success since its creation 25 years ago. Several illustration pictures of the city and its most famous monuments were taken on this occasion.
