On 14/01/2012, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Poland in Zabrze along with Jerzy Buzek, President of the EP, to receive the Diamond Award of Laurels of Abilities and Competence. In his thanking remarks to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Katowice, he stressed the importance of Regions in the EU. The President emphasized the need of investing more in European Regions and of supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He also stated that there were 23 million unemployed people in Europe and 23 million SMEs. If each one of those SMEs created only one job, the problem of the unemployment would be solved.
