Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council and Mahmud Abbas, President of the Palestinian National Authority held a joint press statements following their meeting in Brussels.
The EU has been working with the Palestinian Authority to build up the institutions of a future democratic, independent and viable Palestinian State living side by side with Israel and its neighbours. These efforts are regularly debated by the EU Council of Ministers.
The Action Plan concluded with the Palestinian Authority set up the agenda of the economic and political cooperation with the EU. The legal basis for the EU’s relations with the PA is the Interim Association Agreement on Trade and Cooperation signed with the PLO on behalf of the Palestinian Authority.
The European Commission is the biggest donor of financial assistance to the Palestinians.

||SOUNDBITE (English) Herman Van Rompuy: we discussed the Palestinian reconciliation agreement signed in Cairo, in May this year. The EU has welcomed the agreement and has consistently called for intra Palestinian reconciliation behind President Mahmud Abbas.

||SOUNDBITE (English) Herman Van Rompuy: we touched upon the developments in the Middle East peace process, I emphasized how the EU remained committed to the two states solution, I underlined that the best way to achieve this is through direct negotiations between the parties. The EU is actively is actively pursuing this through the Middle East Quartet.
||SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mahmud Abbas (followed by translator in English): I informed the president of the developments of my meetings with Hamas two weeks ago in Cairo, and the advances we have made in this dialogue.

I hope the day will come when we will raise the flag of Palestine at the UN, and with the support of the EU.
