On 15 December 2011 in Brussels, Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, and Dražen Bošnjaković, Croatian Minister for Justice, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support training of judges and prosecutors in Croatia, to help train the country's judiciary ahead of the country’s accession to the EU in July 2013. Under this agreement Croatia would be able to participate in EU programmes to support training for judges, lawyers and other legal practitioners. The agreement followed Croatia’s signature of the Accession Treaty to the EU on 09/12/2011, paving way for the country to become the EU's 28th Member State.
The EU provided financial support through co-funding for European judicial training activities at national and European level. It was part of the EU's goal of training 700,000 legal practitioners in European law by 2020.
