John Dalli, Member of the EC in charge of Health and Consumer Policy, took part in the Annual General Meeting of the Europe Direct Information Centres on 6 November 2011 in Valletta, Malta.
The conference, organised by Europe Direct Network, was attended by 350 members of the Europe Direct Network and a significant number of Representation network correspondents.
The mission of the Europe Direct information centres in the regions is to provide citizens with tailored information on the EU, as well as to promote, as proactive communicators, active European citizenship and informed debate about Europe.

||SOUNDBITE by John Dalli (in ENGLISH) saying that the city of Brussels is 2000 kilometres away from Valletta; this geographic distance goes along with perception; Brussels, in terms of the European Union and its decision-making, is sometimes regarded as far away from citizens who live in Valetta, Lisbon, the West of Ireland, Helsinki, Munich or Sofia; it is for this reason that Brussels needs the 500 information centres of the Europe Direct Network; they very much rely on their cooperation to make EU citizens aware of their electoral rights. ||SOUNDBITE by John Dalli (in ENGLISH) saying that this is a very important gathering for people whose function is to pass on the message of Europe and about Europe to the European citizens all over the EU Member States; it is very important that this meeting will be a collection of experiences, practices and the identification of the best of these practices that can be emulated in the various Member States that are represented there; he would very much hope that from this meeting they'll get a more coherent and coordinated approach towards telling people what Europe is all about and what are their rights in Europe because if people don't know their rights they cannot use their rights.
