On 23 June 2011, Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, and Dirk Niebel, German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, went to Dhaka where they participated in the opening ceremony of a section of Viyellatex Group Company. Andris Piebalgs also met Dipu Moni, Bangladeshi Minister for Foreign Affairs, and visited several EU-funded projects. Bangladesh was an emerging success story among Least Developed Countries. Thanks to its encouraging economic growth over past years, 15 million people have lifted themselves out of poverty. But these efforts had to be enhanced if Bangladesh was to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. As a reliable long-term partner, the EU would continue to support Bangladesh in their common goal of combating poverty and creating conditions for sustainable development of the country. The EU, together with its Member States, was the largest donor to Bangladesh, with €403 million earmarked between 2007 and 2013 to support human and social development, governance and human rights, economic and trade development, environmental protection, climate change and food security. Total EU assistance to Bangladesh amounted to approximately €100 million per year.

00:00:46 SOUNDBITE by Andris Piebalgs (in ENGLISH): my visit to Bangladesh is related to the fact that Bangladesh is a least developed country. Not long enough, 40 % of the population were living under poverty threshold and we are trying to support health, education and with this aspect we increase fast access to health and education. We have achieved with Abul Maal Abdul Muhtih, these decrees. But at the same time, it is very important that people have a job, they have a future and a part of our strategy is to give access to the EU market. Today 52% of Bangladesh exports are going to the EU market and it definitely gives jobs to millions of people. The ready made garment industry gives jobs to 5 million of people and from these 5 million people, 75 % are women. So it means also structural change. But it is important that we follow very closely all the labour standards, working safety standards and what we see here, they demonstrate that our Bangladeshi partners are clearly engaged in this issue. And we are supporting some EU projects that are really increasing social standards in the ready made garment industry. 00:01:17

00:02:16 SOUNDBITE by Andris Piebalgs (in ENGLISH): health is one of the major social services that the Government needs to provide. In Bangladesh, it is 16,2 dollars per capita. International standards would be well nearly 3 % higher. So it is important that this main point needs to be addressed. So there are two particular challenges: maternal health and children health. Here we are in front of a hospital where we see how challenging the task is but at the same time I would say that Bangladesh has achieved fantastic progress in maternal health. 00:00:34
