On 23 June 2011, Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, gave a press conference for the RegioStars 2011 Awards, which honour the most innovate projects supported by European regional policies. All EU regions were invited to submit projects having benefited from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) or from Cohesion Funds after 1 January 2000. Sixty-six projects matching these criteria were presented by eighteen Member States. Among these projects, thirty-one were short listed by the jury. In 2011, six awards are to be awarded: two in the "economic competitiveness" category, two for "low-carbon economy" and two in the "information and communication" category. The awards ceremony will take place on the evening of 23 June. Madeira and the Azores in Portugal, Amsterdam in the Netherlands, the northern part of central Sweden and Wales, in the United Kingdom, will take centre stage. Several municipalities in northern peripheral regions of Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands also won thanks to a territorial cooperation project.
