On 23 June 2011, Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship, participated in the Toy Safety Event in Rotterdam. The Vice-President of the EC verified the opening of containers filled with toys that are daily checked to ensure that no harmful toys enter in the EU market. From 20 July 2011, manufacturers/importers need to respect strengthened safety requirements for toys imported in the EU. By this date, Member States will need to incorporate all requirements set by the new Toy Safety Directive adopted in 2009.

||Soundbite by Antonio Tajani (in ENGLISH): in Europe we have new rules for safety in toys for young people, for our children. But it is important to implement these rules. Therefore it is crucial, the cooperation between the European commission and customer services in all Member States. I am in Rotterdam for the good work of the Dutch customer services, because they are working very well for the control of toys coming from abroad, from china for example.

||Soundbite by Antonio Tajani (in ENGLISH): legislative measures alone are not enough. Even the strictest legislation is useless without proper enforcement. Market surveillance is therefore a fundamental tool in creating confidence in the European market and its legislation. Therefore this cooperation is very important and I want to thank you for your strong engagement for the implementation of our rules.
