On 20 June 2011, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received George Papandreou, Greek Prime Minister. The President recognized the tremendous efforts made by the Prime Minister and his government over the year 2011, in the most challenging of circumstances, to address the very serious budgetary situation in Greece. The results, in terms of fiscal consolidation and growth-enhancing reforms, have already been substantial but there remained much work to do.
They discussed the crucial vote of the EP at the end of June 2011 with the decision on the ambitious package of further fiscal measures and privatisations put forward by Greek's government and agreed with the EU and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Approval of this package was a necessary condition for the Eurogroup to be able to agree in July on the disbursement of the next tranche of financial support to Greece. José Manuel Barroso trusted that Greece's elected representatives would back these measures in a spirit of national and indeed European responsibility.
