EU Prize for contemporary architecture: extracts and statement by Androulla Vassiliou

On 20 June 2011, Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, attended a press conference to announce the Laureate of the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture also called "Mies van der Rohe Award". This prize is one of the most prestigious on the international architecture scene and is jointly granted every two years by the EU and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation to acknowledge and reward the best architectural works built in Europe during the past two years. In 2011, the Prize celebrated its 12th edition and 22nd anniversary. The Neues Museum in Berlin was the winner of this edition of the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture. This building was a reconstruction, blending old and new, by British architect Sir David Chipperfield in collaboration with Julian Harrap. The Emerging Architect Special Mention award went to Ramón Bosch and Bet Capdeferro for the Collage House in Girona in Spain. The Prize consists of 60 000 € and the Special Mention consists of 20 000 €.
