On 20 June 2011, Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, attended a press conference to announce the Laureate of the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture also called "Mies van der Rohe Award". This prize is one of the most prestigious on the international architecture scene and is jointly granted every two years by the EU and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation to acknowledge and reward the best architectural works built in Europe during the past two years.
In 2011, the Prize celebrated its 12th edition and 22nd anniversary. The Neues Museum in Berlin was the winner of this edition of the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture. This building was a reconstruction, blending old and new, by British architect Sir David Chipperfield in collaboration with Julian Harrap. The Emerging Architect Special Mention award went to Ramón Bosch and Bet Capdeferro for the Collage House in Girona in Spain. The Prize consists of 60 000 € and the Special Mention consists of 20 000 €.

The prize recognizes and stimulates world class quality in European architecture, and raises awareness among the wider public role that architecture plays in the cultural and social landscape of Europe.

So, my congratulations to our winners, who have created two exceptional buildings, the reconstructions of the Neues Museum by David Chipperfield in collaboration with Julian Harrap, brings together the past and the present in a mix of contemporary architecture, restoration and art. The Collage House, in Girona, is another remarkable renovation by Ramon Bosch and Bet Capdeferro.

So, I am mentioning this figures, because a part from the value of culture per se, should be understood, specially during this times of crisis, that cultural and creative industries is equally important for our growth and our development.
