The 5th edition of the European Development Days (EDD) took place in Brussels on 6 and 7 December 2010. Organised by the European Commission and the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, EDD is the leading European forum where the questions and issues about international development cooperation are debated.
Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, made a statement on the first day of the EDD.

||SOUNDBITE by Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, (in ENGLISH) saying that the Europeans care about other parts of the world, regions that are suffering more; the EU must find new ways to improve its development cooperation; we need a step change to address the issues of the crisis and we need to reflect how we can better support the process to create growth opportunities for the developing world;
saying that the EU should very much support countries where positive changes are happening and focus all European aid on two areas: agriculture, because it is very important for food security and wealth creation, and energy, because energy is a key for any growth; that means that other areas would be left for other donors; this is a time when efforts need to be concentrated on areas where the most changes can be made for the countries themselves to move very fast forward.
