On 6 December 2010, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received George A. Papandreou, Greek Prime Minister, six months after a massive bail-out was agreed upon by Eurozone Member States for the country.
Eurozone Member States and the IMF agreed in May 2010 a 110 billion euro three-year bail-out package to rescue Greece's embattled economy. The deal is designed to prevent Greece from defaulting on its massive debt. The EU will provide 80 billion euro in funding and the rest will come from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The austerity plan aims to achieve fresh budget cuts of 30 billion euro over three years - with the goal of cutting Greece's public deficit to less than 3% of GDP by 2014. It currently stands at 13.6%.
